Pai is a small town in northern Thailand’s Mae Hong Son Province, near the Myanmar border, about 146 km north-west of Chiang Mai on the northern route to Mae Hong Son. It lies on the Pai River.
Spend enough time in northern Thailand and eventually you’ll hear the comparisons between Pai and Bangkok’s Khao San Road. Although this is definitely a stretch, in recent years the small town has started to resemble something of a Thai island getaway – without the beaches.
Guesthouses appear to outnumber private residences in the ‘downtown’ area, a trekking agency or restaurant is never more than a few steps away
Pai – Countryside Only a short walk away from the main streets and guesthouses is the riverside and surrounding countryside, which includes hot springs, waterfalls and caves – untouched land that in parts makes you feel like you are the only person around. Yet to succumb to tourist ruin.
